Marcel is an internationally active board member, chair, and advisor with a strong belief that technology is our best way out of the sustainability challenge. He works across industrial biotech, sustainable chemistry, and climate tech, where bold innovation is needed to move from extractive models to truly circular solutions.

His perspective is shaped by a career spanning corporates, startups, and investing. Marcel has built and scaled businesses from within executive teams at global players such as DSM, now dsm firmenich, as well as in entrepreneurial and venture backed environments including Avantium. Today, he brings this experience into boardrooms across Europe and beyond, combining strategic clarity with a pragmatic sense of what it takes to execute.

Marcel is a trusted sparring partner for founders and young CEOs. He enjoys working closely with leadership teams at critical moments, helping them turn ambitious technology into focused strategy, strong organizations, and long term value. Alongside his board and chair roles, he is a venture partner at BVP.

When he is not in a boardroom, Marcel enjoys spending time with his family, often traveling together. He lives in Haarlem, close to the North Sea, where he likes to clear his head by walking along the coast. He also enjoys hiking, visiting museums in Amsterdam, and painting himself. Several times a year, he travels to Italy and is slowly but enthusiastically improving his Italian to connect more deeply with the people and culture he enjoys.

Marcel holds a PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Groningen.
