Carmel van den Berk
Principal
Carmel invests in early-stage healthtech and medtech companies focused on strengthening the long-term resilience of healthcare systems. She is particularly drawn to teams that turn complex clinical and operational challenges into simple, scalable solutions that can be adopted in real-world settings.
She brings a hybrid investor–operator perspective shaped by experience across venture capital, healthcare strategy, and company building. Having worked closely with founders from early clinical validation through commercialization, Carmel supports management teams on fundraising, strategic focus, and the organizational transition required to scale in regulated healthcare markets.
Prior to joining Brightlands Venture Partners, Carmel served as Chief of Staff at Coramaze Technologies , where she worked at the intersection of strategy, operations and capital formation. Before that, she was an investor at MTIP , a Swiss-based HealthTech and MedTech fund, where she worked across early- and growth-stage investments and held board positions at Coramaze Technologies and Nitinotes Surgical. Earlier in her career, she worked in healthcare strategy consulting at KPMG .
Outside of work, Carmel spends much of her time in the mountains, ski touring and rock climbing. She is also an avid marathon runner, currently training for her next race.
Carmel holds a double MSc in Health Economics and Management from Erasmus University Rotterdam , University of Bologna , University of Oslo , and University of Innsbruck , and a BSc in Health Sciences from VU Amsterdam .
